DEIRDRE
I was overwhelmed with everything. Setting up the ball, my brother confessing he had depression and of course, Hope. Not to mention my hidden feelings for Sawyer which I still hadnât found the courage to bring to the surface.
Sawyer invited me over to his place. I wasnât sure if that was a good idea, but I knew we both needed some respite from the constant planning. We had been working so hard and I didnât want to bring him down. Especially considering he had a date with Penelope coming up. Regardless of my feelings towards him I wanted Sawyer to be happy. If it meant that heâd be happiest with her, then Iâd swallow my own emotions and let him be.
When I arrived at Sawyerâs place, he opened the door with the goofiest grin. I immediately relaxed and returned a smile.
âWhatâs got you so cheery?â I asked.
He playfully shrugged and dragged me into his apartment, closing the door behind me. Sawyer then swayed me around the room and danced as though we were already at the ball.
I laughed as he dipped me. The long-sleeved white shirt he was wearing really hugged his muscles. âWhat are you doing?â
âPracticing,â Sawyer replied, then he lifted me back up. âIâm not a very good dancer, and to be honest, neither are you.â
âIt looks like youâre doing fine.â
He stepped away from me and bowed with one arm behind his back. âThank you, Madam. I should be asking properly like a gentleman. May I have this dance?â
I held the sides of my top and curtsied because thatâs what I wore over my denim jeans. âYou may.â
Sawyer reached out his hand and we danced again. I smiled, laughed, and for a moment felt all the tension escape my body along with my worries. It may have been brief, but it was a moment I hadnât had in a long time. One I knew I would savor.
He spun me around the room till I felt dizzy. We moved from room to room, between couches and in the comfort of his bedroom then back out towards the kitchen. Sawyerâs laugh triggered my own and I felt safe in his arms. I forgot that I had feelings towards him and just enjoyed the moment, however fleeting it was.
When we slowed down, Sawyer still held onto me and we swayed on the spot.
âAre you ready for the ball?â he asked. âNot long now.â
My original plan was to build up the courage to tell Sawyer how I felt after the event. But by then he would have gone on a date with Penelope, and I probably would have chickened out anyway.
âIâm so ready to get this over with and receive our bonus.â
âDo you have a dress?â
I nodded. Thoughts of Sawyer all dressed up in a suit had caused my cheeks to flush pink. âI found one a few weeks back. Itâs really nice.â
Sawyerâs hands rested on my waist. He held it there and I felt my body warm up from the inside.
âIâm sure youâll look incredible.
